Island of Ischia

Ischia is the largest of all the islands in the Bay of Naples. It is also known as the ‘green island’ because of its wonderful luxuriant vegetation. As it is a volcanic island, the soil is extremely fertile and it also has a number of thermal springs. Since its position in the Mediterranean is very favourable, it has been a popular stopping-place on trading routes since the times of the Etruscans and the Ancient Greeks.
The island is divided into 6 administrative areas: Ischia, Casamicciola, Lacco Ameno, Forio, Serrara Fontana and Barano d'Ischia.
Ischia Porto is the throbbing heart of the life of the island, with its marvellous beaches like Cartaromana Beach. It lies opposite the Aragonese Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in the Mediterranean with a fascinating history, built on a little island of volcanic rock. An isthmus joins the castle to Ischia Ponte, an old fishing-villagewhich has retained all its original charm.
We leave the harbour of Ischia Porto and proceed to Casamicciola Terme, the most important town on the island for thermal spas. From here we move on to Lacco Ameno, the territory which stretches from the sea to the lower slopes of Mount Epomeo, the highest peak on the island (788 m). Lacco Ameno is famous for a mushroom-shaped rock of green tufa called the ‘Fungo’. Forio, situated between the promontories of Punta Caruso and Punta Imperatore, has two of the most beautiful beaches in Ischia: Citara Beach and San Francesco Beach. From here, it’s only a short distance to Sorgeto Bay, a wonderful place for swimming, even in the coldest months, because it contains natural pools of thermal water.
Now we move on again to Serrara Fontana, the territory of which extends from the sea to the top of Mount Epomeo. However, within this administrative area, the only village actually on the sea is S. Angelo, a picturesque fishing-port, which is a pedestrian precinct.
Near S. Angelo is the Maronti Beach, the longest on the island, with about 2 km of fine sand. Here, in some points, the intensive geological thermal activity results in the phenomenon of fumaroles (jets of steam coming out of the ground). This beach has another natural phenomenon, the Cava Scura Gorge which, with its spa, dates back to Roman times and is still operating. Going back from the Maronti Beach you get to Barano with its well-known Nitrodi Spring. The therapeutic properties of its water have been famous  since ancient times.
